Patriotic Pasta

This is a fun patriotic recipe for Memorial Day, 4th of July, or Labor Day. It is great because you can make your food festive and it is still edible!

It is a lot easier than it looks. I was very unsure about how well it would work and also about how it would taste. It does not change the taste at all actually so that was a fun discovery.

The final product looks like the picture below. I did not share a recipe for using it, just more of a tutorial on how to make it. You can use the cooked pasta for pasta salad, a pasta dish, macaroni, etc. It can be used in any of the ways you would normally use pasta so get creative or just make what your family likes!

You can also use this as a craft for a rainy day and any colors will work. Your kids can make it with you and then play with the pasta or use it to make macaroni necklaces, picture frames and more!

Cook pasta according to the package directions. I cooked mine al dente and drained it. Gather your food coloring. I like McCormick the best. You can adjust the amounts of food coloring if you want the pasta to be more bright or less bright. I would say 5 drops less or more would make a significant difference in the color result.

Especially if you will be using the pasta for a cheesy type dish that will adjust the color, you may want to consider using more food coloring drops so it is bright before you use the remaining ingredients in your recipe.

After cooking I added 1/3 of the pasta into a snack sized Ziploc bag with 2 tablespoons of water and 20 drops of food coloring. Then shake it up to be sure the pasta is fully coated.

Pour the pasta into a colander and rinse it before serving. img_5365Repeat with the blue food coloring to make the second color. Rinse and then combine all the colors in a dish.
